Introduction Speech(Jessica)
Animal abuse is an issue both worldwide and in our community. Our purpose is to educate the public on how you can help end animal abuse, and how to rescue animals from shelters. I want you to understand the seriousness of the topic. We chose this topic because animal cruelty is something you hear about everyday. |Household pets are beaten by abusive owners, and starved because they don’t have a voice. Dogs are put into fights so that greedy men and women can gamble over the lives of these animals. The make up, lotions, and perfumes we wear everyday are tested on defenseless, small animals.| According to the Humane Society |“China requires that all cosmetics be tested on animals. Therefore, cosmetics companies selling products in China are not cruelty-free. Brazil also requires that some, but not all, cosmetics be tested on animals.” |These companies have thousands of ingredients that they could choose from that are already proven to be safe, but instead they torture lab animals. I agree with Ellen Degeneres’ simple solution| “If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead.” |But in the US, over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in labs every year. As you can see, animal abuse is a problem in Eastern North Carolina and in the world.
Some people witness animal abuse every day, and don't report it. By simply informing these people on how they can help, we can save hundreds of animals, and get them to the safety of a shelter. But, there’s another problem; what happens to animals in shelters? In North Carolina, an animal is only required to stay in a shelter for 72 hours before it is euthanized. Like most people, I find this to be inhumane, but what else can they do? |These shelters don’t have enough space or money to keep packing in animals, and it’s not safe with the amount of diseases floating around.| We want to encourage people who are interested in buying new pets to adopt from a shelter. For example, after Christmas I am getting a dog from our local shelter, as opposed to buying one at a store. Simple changes like these can save animals. There are many organizations in our area that rescue animals from shelters so that they aren’t killed. Anyone could start a business like this, and make such a huge difference. This is what our project is all about. Not only are we making a difference in the lives of animals everywhere, but we are showing the community what they can do to help. We are raising awareness and spreading the word on animal cruelty, and just having you listen to me say this makes you more aware of the topic. You could open your phone right now and donate to organizations like ASPCA or the Humane Society. You can call animal control and save the lives of the starving dogs you pass on your way to work or school. Stop buying products that are tested on animals. Call the animal shelter and ask what you can donate to them. YOU can rescue animals. WE can end animal cruelty. I know that this project won’t end animal abuse entirely, but every donation that we make to a shelter, and every time someone makes an adoption, lives are being saved, and that’s what fueled us through this project.| We want you to go out in the world and end animal abuse, one call, one donation, or one adoption at a time.
